How do you design a cover without a budget for either photography or illustration?
By placing the table of contents on the cover and adding easily rendered or found
images to create a lively juxtaposition of pictures and text that can be updated
with each issue. This design process began as a bit of a scavenger hunt: I drew
the yin-yang, and ran down the hall to photograph the subject of the interview
article (conveniently my boss at the time). The editor came up with pictures of a
vintage sign and the two gentlemen doing the funky walk. An arrow was used for
the banner — wonderfully appropriate to an organization of wayfinding and sign
designers. I designed this while an Associate at Gallagher & Associates.
